Five Versions of Modern Farmhouse and the Design that Won Our Heart

Updated: Dec 22, 2019

A few years ago when two of our friends told us they're building their own house, our jaws dropped to the floor. We were ordinary working professionals who started to build a career after surviving the Great Recession. We thought only rich people with endless means could afford this luxury. We were so intrigued that we kept grilling our friends on the details of the project, thinking maybe someday we would be lucky enough to have the same opportunity.

That day unexpectedly came.

We knew we could not afford everything we wanted, so our wishes were really simple to begin with: 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and open concept. There are many styles of homes that would meet these criteria, but the ones that caught my eyes all have one thing in common: they have a white, simple look.

Although I knew early on what style of house I like the most, DH was a late adopter of the modern farmhouse look. He actually abhorred the design at the beginning--it seemed too white and not cool enough for his taste. We agreed to build a gray house instead and found various inspiration pictures in that theme.

Guess what? After weeks of going through gray designs, one day after seeing this picture, he suddenly had a change of mind. The clean lines, wood tone, combined with white, grey and black color scheme, all seems very classic. This particular picture somehow spoke to him and made him realize having a white house is not that bad after all.

There is a variety of modern farmhouse designs. This has become a really popular choice recently, probably due to Fixer Upper. We are by no means trend seekers. Our house will not have many design features of a farmhouse, like a large porch, metal roof, barn doors, etc. We have a small city lot after all. But this simple style illustrated in the above examples will likely stay timeless many years down the road.
